Gideon Tsang (b. 1974, Saskatoon, Canada) is a lens-based artist residing in Austin, Texas. For twenty-five years he led spiritual communities and collaborative art spaces. His photography is the continuation of that practice: the camera became the next instrument in a long investigation of presence and what can be known through sustained attention.
He makes paintings with a camera, large-scale photographs created entirely through in-camera techniques. Before raising the camera, he enters a state of receptive presence through daily meditation and the practices he developed over decades of spiritual leadership. He sees the camera as a paintbrush and his practice as a form of deep attention, walking for hours and collaborating with nature to make images that sit in the space between photography and painting.
